About Knight Foundation :
We are a national foundation with local roots. We choose, as the Knight brothers chose, to seek opportunities that can transform both communities and journalism, and help them reach their highest potential. We want to ensure that each community’s citizens get the information they need to thrive in a democracy. And we ask, as we evaluate opportunities and grants, “Is this truly transformational. Because grant making requires a sound financial base, we preserve the Knight brothers’ gift through prudent investment and careful management.
Details:
The Knight News Challenge has opened the application process for its 2010 awards, which will see up to $5 million granted to journalism and online media projects. The Knight News Challenge is a wide-open, international contest seeking digital, open-source projects that distribute news in the public interest to geographic communities.Projects entered must use digital open source technology, distribute news in the public interest and test their products within a local community. The News Challenge is an initiative of John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Journalism Program. The first step is to fill out a simple form that tells the essence of your idea. If your idea shows promise, you’ll be asked to write a full proposal.

If you submit under the closed category, your application will only be read by Knight staff and the panel of reviewers. However, if you are selected as a winner, Knight Foundation will then publicize the idea and you will eventually need to share the intellectual property you create with the world.
