Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur PG courses in Applied Sciences Admission Notice 2010 | BESUS Admission Notification 2010
Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur
The nucleus of the Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESUS) was created in 1856 when British Government introduced engineering education in eastern India by establishment of Civil Engineering College at the Writers’ Buildings, Calcutta, which moved to the present location at Shibpur, Howrah at 1880. This second oldest engineering institution in India was renamed to “Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur” in 1921 and had a pioneering role in introducing various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering science for the first time in the country. In recognition of the services rendered to the nation for close to a century and a half, the Institution was elevated to the status of a Deemed University in 1992.
“Science” as a discipline was very much integral to the Institution’s teaching curricula even during the late 19th Century. The tradition carries on now more explicitly with the introduction of post-graduate degree courses in Applied Sciences since 2000. In October 2004 this institution was further elevated to a full-fledged state-aided University, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur to pursue the cause of creation and dissemination of knowledge to the society. The University is very soon to be upgraded to Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, an Institute of National Importance.
The University is located in the sylvan surrounding with lush green ambience on the western bank of the river Hooghly, opposite the city of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) which is connected with all the major Indian cities as well as to some foreign ones by rail and air and also by the Golden Quadrangle Road Network. The nearest Railway Station is Howrah, which is 6 km from the University Campus and the Airport is at a distance of 30 km. The University is connected to Kolkata, situated across the Hooghly River by the Rabindra Setu (1943) and Vidyasagar Setu (1987).
