Note: – All questions are compulsory. Marks are indicated for each question.
1. Explain with reference to the context any one of the given passages: (4)
a. Hindu civilization will, we believe, retain its continuity. The Bhagwad Gita will not cease to inspire men of action, and the upnishads, men of thought. The charm and graciousness of the Indian way of life will continue, however much affected it may be by the labour saving devices of the west. People will still love the tales of the heroes of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and the loves of Dushayanta and shakuntala and Pururava and Urvashi.
b. So should I, so would lots of people. Anyway we have discovered some of the things that count as being civilized making beautiful things, thinking freely and thinking new things, and keeping the rules, without which people could not get on together. Grown ups call the first of these things art, the second science and philosophy, and the third political justice and ethics. Slow these things may not be all civilization is, but any way they will do to go on with.
c. Patience usually wins in the end, however, and after countless night of waiting and watching and going without sleep, a fine lioness did condescend to come and pose for her portrait.
2. Read any one of the following extract and answer the questions that follow: (4)
a. That brings me to John’s blood pressure. It’s 140/90 the upper limit of normal for his age. The 140 measures the pressure I work against while contracting and the 90 is the pressure while I am resting between beats. The lower figure is more important. The higher the figure rise, the less rest I get. And without adequate rest a heart simply works itself to death. There are a lot of things John could do to get his blood pressure down to safer levels. The first is to get rid of excess weight. He would be surprised at the drop in blood pressure that would follow.

(i) What is the upper limit of normal blood pressure of the middle aged people?
(ii) What’s the normal pressure when the heart contracts?
(iii) What is the normal pressure when the heart rests between beats?
(iv) What leads heart to work itself to death?
b. Compassion, daya, is the quality which is more characteristics of women than of men, I read recently a book which speaks about the decline of womanhood, and says that this is so because there is a decline in compassion. In other words, the natural quality of woman is compassion. If you do not give compassion, you are not human. It is therefore, essential for every human being to develop the quality of considerateness, kindness and compassion. with out these qualities you are only human animals, nara pasu, not more then that.

(i) What is the reason of decline of womanhood?
(ii) What according to the writer is the natural quality of woman?
(iii) What qualities should human being develop among themselves?
(iv) When does a person become nara pasu, according to the writer?

8. Answer one of the following questions in about 150 words: (5)
a. Show how the child lost all interest in the fair after he got separated from his parents.
b. Give a character of Gyan Babu’s wife.
9. Answer one of the following questions in not more than 30 words: (2)
a. What punish was given to the giant for his selfishness?
b. What was the load that the astrologer had in his mind and how did he get rid of that burden?
10. Explain with reference to the context two of the following: (6)
a. The curfew tolls the knell of parting day, The lowing herd wind slowly o’er the lea, The ploughman homeward plods his weary way, And leaves the world to darkness and to me.
b. Let eyes grow dim and heart grow faint And friendship fail and love betray. Let fate its hundred horrors send And clotted darkness block the way- And nature wore one angry frown To crush you out – still know thy soul, You are divine, march on and on. Nor right nor left, but to the goal !

11. Give the central Idea of one of the following poems: (4)

c. Our Casuarina Tree.
12. Answer one of the following questions in about 150 words: (4)
a. What were the seven visions that king Suddhodana saw in his dream.
b. Why did the sight of the old, the sick and the dead man move the prince so deeply?
13. Name the figures of speech in any two of the following : (1/2+1/2 = 1)
a. Revenge is a kind of wild justice.
b. O! Judgment! Thou art fled to brutish beasts.
c. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.
14. Define and illustrate Personification. (1/2 +1/2 = 1)
